Festo isn't quite the household name that Boston Dynamics is. (And, really, we're not entirely sure Big Dog is a regular topic of conversation at dinner tables yet.) But, it certainly deserves just as much attention for the work they're doing with robotics. After crafting a machine last year that soared around like a herring gull, now the company has created BionicOpter. The 17.3-inch long dragonfly drone can flutter through the air in any direction, and even hover, just like its biological inspiration. Its four carbon fiber and foil wings beat up to 20 times per-second, propelling it through the air as if it were swimming rather than flying. Actually piloting the robo-bug is achieved through a smartphone app, but an on-board ARM-based microcontroller makes small adjustments to ensure stability during flight. There are a few important pieces of information we don't have just yet. For one, it's not clear how long the two-cell lithium ion battery will last, and pricing or availability are missing from the brochure (at the source link). Chances are though, you'll never be able to afford one any way. Thankfully you can at least see this marvel of engineering in action after the break.

(AP) ? Big business and major labor unions appeared ready Friday to end a fight over a new low-skilled worker program that had threatened to upend negotiations on a sweeping immigration bill in the Senate providing a pathway to citizenship for 11 million immigrants already in the U.S.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who's been brokering talks between the AFL-CIO and the Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement that negotiators are "very close, closer than we have ever been, and we are very optimistic." He said there were still a few issues remaining.

The talks stalled late last week amid a dispute over wages for workers in the new program, and senators left town for a two-week recess with the issue in limbo. Finger-pointing erupted between the AFL-CIO and the chamber, with each side accusing the other of trying to sink immigration reform, leaving prospects for a resolution unclear.

But talks resumed this week, and now officials from both sides indicate the wage issue has been largely resolved. An agreement would likely clear the way for a bipartisan group of senators to unveil legislation the week of April 8 to dramatically overhaul the U.S. immigration system, strengthening the border and cracking down on employers as well as remaking the legal immigration system while providing a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

"We're feeling very optimistic on immigration: Aspiring Americans will receive the road map to citizenship they deserve and we can modernize 'future flow' without reducing wages for any local workers, regardless of what papers they carry," AFL-CIO spokesman Jeff Hauser said in a statement. "Future flow" refers to future arrivals of legal immigrants.

Under the emerging agreement, a new "W'' visa program would bring tens of thousands lower-skilled workers a year to the country. The program would be capped at 200,000 a year, but the number of visas would fluctuate, depending on unemployment rates, job openings, employer demand and data collected by a new federal bureau pushed by the labor movement as an objective monitor of the market.

The workers would be able to change jobs and could seek permanent residency. Under current temporary worker programs, workers can't move from employer to employer and have no path to permanent U.S. residence and citizenship.

The new visas would cover dozens of professions such as long-term care workers and hotel and hospitality employees. Currently there's no good way for employers to bring many such workers to the U.S.; an existing visa program for low-wage nonagricultural workers is capped at 66,000 per year and is supposed to apply only to seasonal or temporary jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce said workers would get paid actual wages paid to American workers or the prevailing wages for the industry they're working in, whichever is higher. The Labor Department determines prevailing wage based on rates prevailing in specific localities, so that it would vary from city to city.

The labor organization had accused the chamber of trying to pay workers in the new program poverty-level wages, something the chamber disputed.

There was also disagreement about how to deal with certain higher-skilled construction jobs, such as electricians and welders, and it appears those will be excluded from the deal, said Geoff Burr, vice president of federal affairs at Associated Builders and Contractors. Burr said his group opposes such an exclusion because, even though unemployment in the construction industry is high right now, at times when it is low there can be labor shortages in high-skilled trades and contractors want to be able to bring in foreign workers. But unions pressed for the exclusion, Burr said.

The low-skilled worker issue had loomed for weeks as perhaps the toughest matter to settle in monthslong closed-door talks on immigration among Schumer and seven other senators, including Republicans John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of Florida. The issue helped sink the last major attempt at immigration reform in 2007, when the legislation foundered on the Senate floor after an amendment was added to end a temporary worker program after five years, threatening a key priority of the business community.

The amendment passed by just one vote, 49-48. President Barack Obama, a senator at the time, joined in the narrow majority voting to end the program after five years.

Kenyatta won Kenya's presidency fairly: Supreme Court

By Edmund Blair and Humphrey Malalo

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's Supreme Court upheld Uhuru Kenyatta's presidential election victory on Saturday and his defeated rival quickly accepted the ruling, dousing fears of a repeat of the tribal bloodletting that blighted the country's last vote.

The decision cleared the way for Kenya's richest man to take the top job in east Africa's biggest economy, but left foreign powers with the headache of dealing with a leader charged with crimes against humanity at The Hague.

After the judgment, police fired shots in the air and teargas at hundreds of stone-throwing youths in the western city of Kisumu, a stronghold of defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga, who had challenged Kenyatta's win. Protesters looted shops and burned tires in the street.

But shortly after, Odinga made a nationally-televised statement, accepting the court's unanimous decision.

"The court has now spoken," Odinga told a news conference. "I wish the president-elect, honorable Uhuru Kenyatta, and his team well."

Kenya's outgoing president had called for calm ahead of the judgment which came five years after another ballot dispute triggered violence that left more than 1,200 dead.

"It is the decision of the court that the third and fourth respondents were validly elected," Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said in court, referring to Kenyatta and his running mate for deputy president, William Ruto.

He said the court had done its duty at a historic moment. "It is now for the Kenyan people, their leaders, civil society, the private sector and the media to discharge (their duty), to ensure that the unity, peace, sovereignty and prosperity of the nation is preserved," he added.

After a week of hearings, the six judges of the court had unanimously decided the March 4 vote was conducted in a free, fair and credible manner in line with the constitution, he said.

RALLIES BANNED

Peaceful voting in this year's vote, and the fact the dispute was played out by lawyers not machete-wielding gangs, has already helped repair Kenya's image as a safe haven for investors and tourists.

Paramilitary police, some on horseback, formed a security cordon around the court before the ruling. Police chief David Kimaiyo has repeatedly said he would not allow public rallies.

Kenyatta comfortably beat Odinga in votes won, but only narrowly avoided a run-off by edging above the 50 percent threshold.

Western donors are watching the fate of a regional trade partner and a country they see as vital to stability in a volatile area. They had also said before the victory was confirmed that a Kenyatta win would complicate relations.

He is facing charges at the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity, accused of helping incite the violence after the 2007 vote. Kenyatta denies the charges and has promised to cooperate with the court to clear his name.

Western nations have a policy of having only "essential contacts" with indictees of the court. They say that will not affect dealings with the Kenyan government as a whole, but will worry the issue could drive a long-time ally of the West closer to emerging powers such as China.

David Cameron, prime minister of former colonial power Britain, wrote to Kenyatta to congratulate him and encouraged Kenyans to accept the decision of the court.

Neighboring African states have also been keeping a careful eye on proceedings after they were hit by the knock-on effects when vital trade routes through Kenya were shut down five years ago.

Bungie shows off 'Destiny' characters on video

"Halo" creator Bungie has been sparing with details on the gameplay of its next big project, "Destiny," but liberal with concept art. The veil was lifted a little further Friday with the release of a video showing characters making the jump from concept to in-game model.

The video was shown at Bungie's panel at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. While it doesn't contain any actual gameplay, there's plenty of info to be extracted from the character models and animations.

For instance, the "Cabal" fighters are heavily armored and likely fill the role of tank. The three classes shown at the end ? Titan, Warlock, and Hunter ? fit neatly into the "warrior, wizard, rogue" archetypes already in place in thousands of games.

Sharp-eyed viewers will identify several influences, from "Warhammer 40K" and "Star Wars" to manga like "Appleseed" to, of course, Bungie's previous games. A batch of concept art was also released, which Kotaku has kindly collected here.

More substantial information about the game itself will likely be given out at E3 in June.

Pilot ejected while diving small airplane near Chattanooga; search under way

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

A student pilot was ejected from a small aircraft above an area east of Chattanooga, Tenn., in a freak accident Friday evening, and authorities were searching for him.

The accident occurred when the owner of the Zodiac 601XL plane was taking lessons from an instructor, NBC station WRCB of Chattanooga reported, citing police. A malfunction caused the plane to nose dive and the canopy flew open -- and neither man was wearing a seat belt, WRCB reported.

The accident occurred at about 2,500 feet,?the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.?

The instructor was able to land the aircraft back at Collegedale Municipal Airport, operations manager Chris Hancock confirmed to NBC News. He directed further questions to a Collegedale police spokesman who could not immediately be reached.

A ground search was under way in Bradley County, WRCB said. The Times Free Press said the owner-pilot had a cell phone with him and rescuers were pinging it in an attempt to find him.

Neither of the men was identified publicly by authorities.

WRCB said the plane had been owned by a man killed in a December crash and then was sold to the current owner, described as an experienced pilot who wanted more training in the Zodiac.

The Zodiac 601XL is a single-engine kit aircraft offered for home builders. Its two seats are side by side under a large domed canopy.

Jumbo Squid-Cam Uncovers Secrets of Elusive Creature

To see firsthand how an elusive species of jumbo squid lives, scientists have strapped video cameras to the carnivorous sea creature in the eastern Pacific.

The footage has helped reveal some remarkable secrets of the Humboldt squid: They are capable of amazing bursts of speed, up to nearly 45 mph (72 km/h); they "talk" to each other by changing their body color; and they hunt in big synchronized groups.

Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) ? which can grow to more than 6 feet (2 meters) in length and 100 pounds (45 kilograms) in weight ? have razor-sharp beaks and toothed suckers. Mass strandings of the species and reports of aggression toward humans have spooked beachgoers for decades, but the jumbo squid are not man-eaters ? they usually feed on small fish and plankton that are no more than a few inches in length, though they sometimes cannibalize each other.

For all the squid's captivating features, scientists still have many questions about the species' behavior, so biologists at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station turned to the National Geographic Society's Crittercam, which has been used to study animals ranging from penguins to hyenas. [Image Gallery: Humboldt Squid Stranding]

Attaching a quart-sized device with a camera and sensors to a squid presents some technical problems. The trick is to find a big enough squid and fix the Crittercam onto a child's bathing suit so that it can be slipped over the creature's fins like a spandex sleeve, Stanford biologist William Gilly explained in a video.

The resulting video footage and data from echosounding studies showed that Humboldt squid can jet-propel themselves at speeds comparable to the fastest ocean fish. They hunt in tightly coordinated groups, a behavior that's usually associated with fish rather than invertebrates (animals without a backbone) like squid, the researchers found. And smaller squid tend keep their distance from the bigger ones, likely to avoid being cannibalized.

Jumbo squid are known to have pigmented cells, called chromatophores, which allow them to change color in response to neural impulses. The cameras allowed the researchers to watch the squid flashing like a strobe light in their natural habitat. Gilly said the only time the squid seem to make these red-and-white color signals is when they encounter another individual of their species.

"We don't know exactly what those discussions mean," Gilly said in a video from Stanford. For now, interpreting those interactions is like trying to decipher what two people are saying to each other just by watching their mouths move, he added.

Humboldt squid live in the eastern Pacific Ocean from the tip of South America up to Mexico, but have been moving farther north in recent years. Scientists believe the species might be migrating up the coast as warming oceans are creating larger low-oxygen zones deep below the surface, environments where the squid live.

A new way to lose weight? Changing microbes in guts of mice resulted in rapid weight loss

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Scientists at Harvard may have new hope for anyone who's tried to fight the battle of the bulge.

New research, conducted in collaboration with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, has found that the gut microbes of mice undergo drastic changes following gastric bypass surgery. Transfer of these microbes into sterile mice resulted in rapid weight loss. The study is described in a March 27 paper in Science Translational Medicine.

"Simply by colonizing mice with the altered microbial community, the mice were able to maintain a lower body fat, and lose weight -- about 20% as much as they would if they underwent surgery," said Peter Turnbaugh, a Bauer Fellow at Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Center for Systems Biology, and one of two senior authors of the paper.

But as striking as those results were, they weren't as dramatic as they might have been.

"In some ways we were biasing the results against weight loss," Turnbaugh said, explaining that the mice used in the study hadn't been given a high-fat, high-sugar diet to increase their weight beforehand. "The question is whether we might have seen a stronger effect if they were on a different diet."

"Our study suggests that the specific effects of gastric bypass on the microbiota contribute to its ability to cause weight loss and that finding ways to manipulate microbial populations to mimic those effects could become a valuable new tool to address obesity," said Lee Kaplan, director of the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Institute at MGH and the other senior author of the paper.

"We need to learn a good deal more about the mechanisms by which a microbial population changed by gastric bypass exert its effects, and then we need to learn if we can produce these effects -- either the microbial changes or the associated metabolic changes -- without surgery," Kaplan, an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, added. "The ability to achieve even some of these effects without surgery would give us an entirely new way to treat the critical problem of obesity, one that could help patients unable or unwilling to have surgery."

While the results were exciting, Turnbaugh warned that it may be years before they could be replicated in humans, and that such microbial changes shouldn't be viewed as a way to lose those stubborn last 10 pounds without going to the gym. Rather, the technique may one day offer hope to dangerously obese people who want to lose weight without going through the trauma of surgery.

"It may not be that we will have a magic pill that will work for everyone who's slightly overweight," he said. "But if we can, at a minimum, provide some alternative to gastric bypass surgery that produces similar effects, it would be a major advance."

While there had been hints that the microbes in the gut might change after bypass surgery, the speed and extent of the change came as a surprise to the research team.

In earlier experiments, researchers had shown that the guts of both lean and obese mice are populated by varying amounts of two types of bacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. When mice undergo gastric bypass surgery, however, it "resets the whole picture," Turnbaugh said.

"The post-bypass community was dominated by Proteobacteria and Proteobacteria, and had relatively low levels of Firmicutes," he said. What's more, Turnbaugh said, those changes occurred within a week of the surgery, and weren't short-lived -- the altered gut microbial community remained stable for months afterward.

While the results may hold out the hope for weight loss without surgery, both Turnbaugh and Kaplan warned that future studies are needed to understand exactly what is behind the weight loss seen in mice.

"A major gap in our knowledge is the underlying mechanism linking microbes to weight loss," Turnbaugh said. "There were certain microbes that we found at higher abundance after surgery, so we think those are good targets for beginning to understand what's taking place."

In fact, Turnbaugh said, the answer may not be the specific types of microbes, but a by-product they excrete.

In addition to changes in the microbes found in the gut, researchers found changes in the concentration of certain short-chain fatty acids. Other studies, Turnbaugh said, have suggested that those molecules may be critical in signaling to the host to speed up metabolism, or not to store excess calories as fat.

Going forward, Turnbaugh and Kaplan hope to continue to explore those questions.

"We think such studies will allow us to understand how host/microbial interactions in general can influence the outcome of a given diet," Kaplan said. "To some degree, what we're learning is a comfort for people who have an issue with their weight, because more and more we're learning that the story is more complicated than just how much you exercise and how much you eat."

'DWTS' dig: D.L. explains his Whitney/Bobby joke

Craig Sjodin / ABC

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Funnyman D.L. Hughley is still in last place on the "Dancing With the Stars" leaderboard heading into Tuesday night?s first elimination show, but the funnyman won a victory of sorts Monday with his much-improved quickstep with pro partner Cheryl Burke.

After their dance, Hughley joked to co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet that he and Cheryl "were doing our Whitney (Houston) and Bobby (Brown) imitation for a little while," referring to the duo?s tense spat that was shown in the pre-taped video segment shown before their dance.

Did Hughley plan the remark about the late pop singer?s reported tumultuous relationship with her ex -- or did it hit him in the moment?

"Of course, it was spontaneous," Hughley told The Clicker after taping. "Let?s be realistic -- I?m a comedian. Even if I danced the quickstep to perfection, people aren?t ever going to watch me do it (outside of this show). They want me to try hard while I?m here."

So Hughley?s remark begs the question -- who?s the Bobby and who?s the Whitney in their dynamic?

"I?m ?Bobby,?" quipped Burke, hastening to add that the tension shown in the video package was a mere few moments of a week-long rehearsal. "D.L. did an amazing job. You can?t even compare his performance from last week. He put so much time into rehearsals and he worked so hard."

"I feel exactly the same way,? Hughley added. ?I know if I work hard, I?ll keep improving."

Still, going into Tuesday night?s elimination with a mere 28 points means Hughley could be going home. But no one can take away his improvement from Monday night.

"No matter what happens, I didn?t let the bully take my lunch money," he said.

Hughley wasn?t the only star to get improved comments (if not improved-enough scores) from the judges. Actor-comedian Andy Dick (who had the support from former cast members of his sitcom "Less Than Perfect" in the audience Monday) recalled getting a rise out of judge Len Goodman during his Mad Hatter-themed jazz dance.

"I saw Len biting his lips so he wouldn?t laugh," Dick said. "We (actually) made him laugh."

Dick?s partner, Sharna Burgess, seemed to be handling her role as Dick?s pro partner, therapist and BFF like a seasoned pro -- not someone brand new to the show.

"Yeah, I?ve been in the industry for a long time," she told The Clicker. "I?ve been on Broadway and made my mark as a dancer. This is about being here for Andy?s journey."

Do you think D.L. Hughley will still be in the ballroom bash after Tuesday night's elimination? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

pain image Brain Differences Seen in People With Migraines

By Amy Norton
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, March 26 (HealthDay News) ? People who suffer migraines may have certain structural differences in pain-related areas of the brain, a new study suggests.

Using MRI scans, researchers found that in specific brain regions related to pain processing, migraine sufferers showed a thinner and smaller cortex compared to headache-free adults. The cortex refers to the outer layer of the brain.

It?s not clear what it all means. But the researchers suspect that certain aspects of brain development may make some people more vulnerable to developing migraines ? and that migraine attacks create further changes in the brain.

The surface area of the brain ?increases dramatically? during fetal development, while the thickness of the cortex changes throughout life, explained senior researcher Dr. Massimo Filippi.

?We speculate that migraine patients might have a sort of cortical ?signature? ? abnormal cortical surface area ? which could make them more susceptible to pain and abnormal processing of painful stimuli,? said Filippi, a professor of neurology at the University Vita-Salute?s San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan.

Once migraines develop, they may alter the thickness of the brain?s cortex, Filippi explained.

A neurologist who was not involved in the study said it ?adds to the growing body of knowledge that patients with migraine have brains that not only function differently, but may actually look different structurally as well.?

That?s important because it helps ?legitimize? migraine as a neurological disorder associated with ?real structural changes in the brain,? said Dr. Matthew Robbins, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Headache Center, in New York City.

Worldwide, an estimated 11 percent of people have had a migraine in the past year. Migraines typically cause intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head, along with sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes nausea and vomiting.

About 30 percent of people with recurrent migraines also have sensory disturbances right before their head pain hits. Those disturbances, known as ?aura,? are usually visual ? like seeing flashes of light or blind spots.

No one knows precisely what causes migraines, but they do seem to involve abnormal brain activity and ? like the new study suggests ? abnormal brain structure.

The findings, published online March 26 in Radiology, come from MRI scans of 63 adults with migraines, and 18 migraine-free men and women.

Filippi?s team found that the migraine brain was complicated. In some areas, the cortex was thicker, but in others ? including pain-processing areas ? the cortex was thinner, versus migraine-free adults.

And there were also differences among migraine sufferers. The exact location of the cortex abnormalities tended to differ between the half of patients who had aura and the half who did not.

According to the researchers, those structural differences might help explain why the two forms of migraine manifest differently.

Filippi said it?s important to understand the structural brain changes linked to migraines because that could give insight into the cause of people?s pain and other symptoms.

But whether any of this will help in managing migraines remains to be seen. According to Filippi, it?s possible that doctors could eventually monitor structural changes in the brain?s cortex to gauge migraine patients? response to treatment, for example.

Robbins, of Montefiore Headache Center, said that right now, it?s ?very hard to say? whether that will happen.

He pointed out that the study participants had one MRI scan, so it?s not known what happens later on. ?It is unclear if these changes in the brain are dynamic ? meaning, do they change over time?? Robbins said.

Filippi said his team is now following these patients to see whether the structural patterns in their brains are ?stable? or tend to shift. They are also doing a similar study of children with migraines.

Motörheadphones Motörizer

If I were reviewing Mot?rhead's video for "Killed by Death," it would probably get five stars, an Editors' Choice, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for its embodiment of everything that is righteous and good about loud guitar rock, tight pants, motorcycles, and sticking it to your boring parents. Alas, we're here to talk about headphones. In the latest installment of celebrity musicians selling you their audio expertise, we have the awesomely named Mot?rheadphones Mot?rizer. At $129 (direct), it's relatively affordable in the celebriphone universe, but can it deliver the pro-quality, DJ-friendly audio the Mot?rheadphones website promises??To a point, definitely, but this headphone pair isn't without its flaws, either.

Design
Normally I begin by describing the overall look and feel of the headphones, but the cables deserve mention first. The detachable cables, of which there are two, are awesome?possibly the best cables I've seen included with a headphone pair to date. They're thick, cloth-woven, and sturdy, and one comes with an inline remote and microphone for mobile devices. The thickness of the cables should keep them from tangling much, if at all, and the build is sturdy enough that it seems unlikely to suffer much wear-and-tear damage over time.

Now, let's tackle the overall look and feel. If you can see the images accompanying this review, it's obvious this is not a subtle design, which makes sense?these are Mot?rhead-branded headphones, so petite and discrete won't do. The Mot?rhead logo (along with the separate word "phones") graces each earcup in metallic, raised lettering, as does an image of a beast's head. Not sure what this beast's name is, but its got vampire canines from hell, terrifying horns, some slobber, and a chain necklace with skull charms on it. (Mother's Day is just around the corner!) I have no qualms the visual concept here?if you're a Mot?rhead fan, this is the look you're after, and the all-black surface with the prominent logo works well.Motrheadphones Motrizer inline

What doesn't work well, from a design standpoint, is much of anything else. Most of the material used looks like cheap plastic with a faux leather grain surface. The ear pads are a dust-collecting black felt-like material. Perplexingly, the headband, which is made of the aforementioned plastic and thick, flexible rubber, is divided in half, as you can see in the images, supported by a semi-flexible hard plastic frame. Most of the materials look and feel cheap, almost as if these are toy headphones instead of the real thing.

The Mot?rizer is "designed with DJs in mind," according to the Mot?rheadphones website, with earcups are "turnable." These earcups turn away from your head about as easily as a typical pair of semi-bulky headphone earcups do, which is to say: Not terribly easy. Sure, you can free an ear up, but while the Mot?rizer's earcup swivels away from the ear, the right earcup can be tilted away to the side, but not very far away from the ear. There's no forward range of motion in the headband, either, which lacks the hinges or supreme flexibility to move the earcups forward or backward gracefully, unlike most current DJ headphones. Compared to an actual DJ headphone pair in the same price range, like the Numark Electrowave, the range or ease of motion is not even close.

From a comfort standpoint, the circumaural ear pads are fairly neutral. They don't seem to get too hot or put too much pressure on your ears and head over time, but they're not exceedingly plush. The real issue is the rubber underside of the headband. It lacks any real padding, and a secure fit will likely eventually feel uncomfortable on the top of your head. Even if it doesn't, hair gets caught on the rubberized surface easily, especially when moving the earcups.

The look of the actual headband is perplexing as well. Not just that it's got no middle section, but the plastic and rubber parts fit together to be flexible, yet this seems to contribute nothing in the way of comfort. And if you bend the flexible parts too far, the plastic covers easily pop off the rubber base. This is cheap design; there's no other way to put it.

While the cables, which I truly do like, are detachable, they connect to a dangling connection point on the right ear cup, rather than connect directly to the earcup itself like most headphones, professional or not, do. This eliminates much of the advantage of having a detachable cable in the first place, as the areas that receive the most stress from use and abuse over time are the ends that connect to the ear cups and the sound source. If the roughly inch-long connector on the ear cup fails, you'll have to send the Mot?rizer in for repair, or replace the whole thing. A plastic accessory snaps onto the connection point, ensuring the cable never comes loose from the connection?a less graceful example of the locking mechanism that can be found on many DJ headphones.

The Mot?rizer ships with the two aforementioned cables and snap-on cable-stabilizing plastic piece, a ?-inch headphone jack adapter, and a large black drawstring pouch with a huge Mot?rhead logo, identical to the design on the ear cups.

Call clarity through the inline microphone is par for the course in the world of cellular fidelity?not terribly clear, but you and your call partner will be able to understand each other.

Performance
The good news is that the headphones sound much better than they look or feel. The Knife's "Silent Shout," a song with tremendous sub-bass content, can be blasted at maximum, unsafe listening levels without the pounding synth kick drum loop distorting at all.

The sub-bass synth hits that sit underneath the drum loop in Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" are delivered with an appropriate amount of thunder?nothing too over the top, but there's plenty of rumble. Meanwhile the attack of the kick drum in the loops has a nice treble edge to it, complemented perfectly by its low-mid sustain. Too often, boosted bass is not met with similarly sculpted high-mids and highs, but that's not a problem here?things are bright and crisp, without ever losing the roundness of the bass response.

Vocals on this track sounded overly sibilant however, meaning that some of the high-mid/high boosting could have probably been dialed back. I'll take a little sibilance over lack of definition in the highs any day, but on certain mixes, it can sound harsh.

On Bill Callahan's "Drover," this sibilance again makes its presence known?every "ess" sound that leaves his mouth shines way too brightly. Again, however, this is a track that can often sound muffled, particularly when boosted bass is part of the equation, and here, things sound bright, crisp, defined?the opposite of muffled. The drumming in the background is lent a nice level of low-mid thump, but not so much as to take the focus off of the vocals and the rest of the mix.

Normally, I'd discuss classical music, here. I'll quickly just say it sounds fine on the Mot?rizer: a little too bright, but some nice added presence to the lower register strings, and some of the brightness sounds great on high register percussion. Now we can discuss the most important part of this review: How does Mot?rhead sound on the Mot?rizer?

Mot?rhead's "Ace of Spades" and "Killed by Death" are both provided a great amount of clarity in high-mids and highs?the drums sound tight, clear, and excellent, as do the guitars, and the vocals sit crisply in the mix, magically, with no hint of sibilance. It's almost as if the Mot?rhead catalogue were the testing suite for the Mot?rizer. (Yes, that was sarcasm?of course it was.) These headphones don't really capitalize on the potential low frequency presence the kick or bass could have in the mix, but things sound clear and compelling nonetheless, and much of this has to do with mixes from the 70s and 80s naturally being less bass-heavy than modern rock, pop, hip hop, and electronic mixes tend to be.

These headphones don't sound quite like a $130 pair, despite not distorting, and there are better options, whether you're looking for better fit, better overall sound, or bigger bass. For the better overall sound, spend less and get the studio-friendly Sennheiser HD 280 Pro?it's got the general balance the Mot?rizer is going for, with a little less deep bass presence, and no sibilance issues. If you're looking for a better DJ option, the aforementioned Numark Electrowave is a solid, affordable pair, and if you want more bass in your life, the Logitech UE 4000 brings sub-bass into the mix with grace and clarity.

Most of the above-mentioned pairs have lower starting prices than the Mot?rizer, and all of them regularly sell online for far less. Simply not distorting on deep bass tracks at high volumes is not enough, nor is tweaking the highs for added clarity. Aside from the distortion-free performance, the sibilance is an issue at times, and these are among the flimsiest-feeling and -looking headphones I've tested, yet they cost a lot more than a significant batch of better options. Mot?rhead fans, it's your money, but I'm not sure this is a must-have item.?

SpaceX dragon spacecraft carrying NASA cargo ready for return to Earth

Mar. 24, 2013 ? More than three weeks after arriving at the International Space Station, the Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) Dragon spacecraft is ready for the trip back to Earth, now scheduled for Tuesday, March 26.

Dragon's originally scheduled March 25 return date was postponed due to inclement weather developing near its targeted splashdown site in the Pacific Ocean. The additional day spent attached to the orbiting laboratory will not affect science samples scheduled to return aboard the spacecraft.

NASA Television will provide coverage of Dragon's departure beginning at 4 a.m. EDT.

Dragon is scheduled to be detached from the Earth-facing side of the station's Harmony module and unberthed by Expedition 35 Flight Engineer and NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn. Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency will back-up Marshburn and monitor Dragon's systems during the activity.

Marshburn, working from the robotic work station in the space station's cupola, will maneuver the station's robotic arm for the release of the spacecraft at 7:06 a.m. Dragon will execute three thruster firings to move away from the station to a safe distance for its deorbit burn at 11:40 a.m. Dragon will splash down around 12:36 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California.

Dragon is the only space station resupply spacecraft able to return to Earth intact. It will return about 2,668 pounds (1,210 kilograms) of science samples from human research, biology and biotechnology studies, physical science investigations and education activities.

Experiment samples coming back to Earth will help researchers continue to assess the impact of long-duration spaceflight on the human body. Returning plant samples will aid in food production during future long-duration space missions and enhance crop production on Earth. Crystals grown aboard and returning from the station could help in the development of more efficient solar cells and semiconductor-based electronics.

Taliban threat forces Pakistan's Musharraf to cancel welcome rally

Kamran Jebreili / AP

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf talks to a journalist in his office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before leaving for Karachi on Sunday.

By Waj S. Khan, Producer, NBC News

KARACHI, Pakistan - Pakistan's ex-president Pervez Musharraf who returned home Sunday after four years in self-exile, was forced to cancel a welcome rally after a video allegedly showing Taliban suicide bombers preparing to target the former leader was released.?

"The threat by the Taliban to General Musharraf's life is real, very real. There are increasing chances every hour that something could happen," said retired Maj. Gen. Rashid Qureshi, his former military spokesperson and now a member of Musharraf's political party, the All Pakistan Muslim League.

Musharraf had been expected to address supporters in Karachi, where he arrived from Dubai.

A video allegedly showing a squad of Pakistani Taliban suicide bombers being trained to target Musharraf was released on Saturday. Like threats in the past, they reiterated that they would kill Musharraf, who is blamed by Islamist militants for supporting the American "war on terror" in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

After landing in Karachi today afternoon, Musharraf was expected to briefly address a crowd, and will then be moved to an undisclosed location.

Photos:?Victims of Pakistan bomb attack mourned

His lawyer and party leader, Ahmad Raza Qasuri, said the former president will have a busy few days "dealing with the legal mess of three very serious cases that have been waiting for him."

On Friday his legal team won him no-arrest bail for three different cases ? one that charges him as a conspirator of the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007, the killing of Akbar Bugti, a separatist politician, in 2006, and for forcibly detaining several judges in 2007 who wouldn't anoint his military rule.

The bail, according to Qasuri, was going to ensure that Musharraf was not arrested on arrival. The country's interior ministry had warned that Musharraf would be arrested as soon as he set foot in Pakistan.

According to the lawyer, Qasuri, Musharraf will have to travel to "unsavory?and unsafe places like Quetta [in Balochistan] to face the courts, which shows that he understands the risks of returning back here."

93% Lore

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (78) | Rotten (6)

It's a harrowing walk through the heart of darkness.

Saskia Rosendahl gives an impressively poised performance as the beautiful teenager, whose determination to protect her remaining family coincides with her growing revulsion toward her parents.

"Lore" is not a pretty story, but it is a good and sadly believable one.

"Lore" is not a love story, nor the story of a friendship. Rather, it's a story of healing and of how breaking, sometimes painfully, is often necessary before that process can begin.

A fiercely poetic portrait of a young woman staggering beyond innocence and denial, it's about the wars that rage within after the wars outside are lost.

Full of surprises, the movie draws a thin line between pity and revulsion - how would you feel if you had discovered your whole life had been based on lies?

Rosendahl's performance is raw and compelling, as Lore fights for her siblings' survival and grows up in a hurry.

Lore and her siblings make a harrowing journey across Germany

Worthwhile, but so subtle that it's frustrating.

The Australian-German co-production takes an unconventional tale and turns it into a challenging, visually stunning and emotionally turbulent film experience.

Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house we go. Except this ain't no fairy tale... unless it is, perhaps, a hint of the beginnings of a new mythology of ... scary childhood and even scarier adolescence...

With a child's perspective on war, "Lore" deserves comparisons with "Empire of the Sun" and "Hope and Glory," and with a feisty female protagonist it stands virtually alone.

Rosendahl...provides both narrative and emotional continuity to a film whose deliberate pace and fragmented presentation of reality might otherwise prove exasperating.

A burning portrait of consciousness and endurance, gracefully acted and strikingly realized, producing an honest sense of emotional disruption, while concluding on a powerful note of cultural and familial rejection.

Although there are moments that push the story a bit beyond credulity, Shortland has created something remarkable by forcing us to find within ourselves sympathy for this would-be Aryan princess.

Stunning, admirable and indelible - truthfully chronicling the triumph of the human spirit - in a class with Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon.'

Can we spare some sympathy or hope for the children of villains, even if they too show signs of their parents' evil? Lore provides no easy answers.

The portrait is miniature and yet indelible, a ghostly reminder of the 20th century.

Shortland is a master of tone here, beginning with a nightmarish, chaotic flight which grows darker during the journey and, perhaps darkest of all, at its final destination.

Remarkable for its unusual perspective...but never manages to connect emotionally as deeply as it might have.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) ? The U.S. State Department, which spends millions of taxpayer dollars a year on the Honduran National Police, has assured Congress that money only goes to specially vetted and trained units that don't operate under the direct supervision of a police chief once accused of extrajudicial killings and "social cleansing."

But The Associated Press has found that all police units are under the control of Director General Juan Carlos Bonilla, nicknamed the "Tiger," who in 2002 was accused of three extrajudicial killings and links to 11 more deaths and disappearances. He was tried on one killing and acquitted. The rest of the cases were never fully investigated.

Honduran law prohibits any police unit from operating outside the command of the director general, according to a top Honduran government security official, who would only speak on condition of anonymity. He said that is true in practice as well as on paper.

Celso Alvarado, a criminal law professor and consultant to the Honduran Commission for Security and Justice Sector Reform, said the same.

"Every police officer in Honduras, regardless of their specific functions, is under the hierarchy and obedience of the director general," he said.

The official line from Honduras, however, is that the money does not go to Bonilla.

"The security programs that Honduras is implementing with the United States are under control of the ministers of security and defense," said Foreign Minister Arturo Corrales, who negotiates the programs with the State Department.

But the security official attributed the contradiction to the politics necessary in a country in the grip of a security emergency.

With 91 murders per 100,000 people, the small Central American nation is often called the most violent in the world. An estimated 40 percent of the cocaine headed to the U.S. ? and 87 percent of cocaine smuggling flights from South America ? pass through Honduras, according to the State Department.

The allegations against Bonilla, along with other concerns about police and military killings, prompted the U.S. Congress to freeze an estimated $30 million in Honduran aid last August. Most has been restored under agreements with the U.S. Department of State over the monitoring of Honduran operations receiving U.S. money.

The agreement doesn't specifically mention Bonilla, but Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, who has led a Congressional group that has questioned human rights violation in Honduras, said last week that he made his intentions clear:

"No units under General Bonilla's control should receive U.S. assistance without credible information refuting the serious allegations against him," Leahy said in an email to the AP.

That information so far has not been provided by the State Department, and the AP's findings have prompted more questions.

"Senator Leahy has asked the State Department to clarify how they differentiate between what they told the Congress and what is being said by those within Honduran police units under his authority," Leahy aide Tim Rieser said Friday. "Sen. Leahy, like others, made clear early on his concerns about Gen. Bonilla and the conduct of the Honduran police."

Dozens of U.S. Congressmen, Leahy chief among them, have been raising concerns for many years about abuses of authority and human rights violations by the Honduran police, a force of 14,000 officers that is considered among the most corrupt in the world.

The AP reported on Sunday that two gang-related people detained by police in January have disappeared, fueling long-standing accusations that the Honduran police operate death squads and engage in "social cleansing." It also found that in the last three years, Honduran prosecutors have received as many as 150 formal complaints about death squad-style killings in the capital of Tegucigalpa, and at least 50 more in the economic hub of San Pedro Sula.

The country's National Autonomous University, citing police reports, has counted 149 civilians killed by police in the last two years, including 25 members of the "18th Street" gang, one of the largest and most dangerous in the country.

California Rep. Sam Farr sent the AP report to every member of Congress on Friday, saying, "I share the concerns outlined in this article about the continued lack of investigations into human rights violations at the hands of Honduran law enforcement officials."

U.S. law, according to an amendment that bears Leahy's name, requires the State Department to vet foreign security forces receiving U.S. aid to make sure the recipients have not committed gross human rights violations. If violations are found, the money is withheld. The State Department in a report last August said Honduras met the provisions of the Foreign Operations and Related Programs Act, which requires that the secretary of state provide Congress proof that Honduras is protecting freedom of expression and investigating and prosecuting all military and police personnel accused of human rights violations.

The department "has established a working group to examine thoroughly the allegations against (Bonilla) to ensure compliance with the Leahy Law," the State Department report to Congress said. "While this review is ongoing, we are carefully limiting assistance to those special Honduran law enforcement units, staffed by Leahy-vetted Honduran personnel who receive training, guidance, and advice directly from U.S. law enforcement, and not under Bonilla's direct supervision."

When asked by AP if the specially vetted Honduran police units working with the U.S. Embassy still report to Bonilla, the Honduran security official said: "Yes, that's how it works, because of personal loyalty and federal law."

U.S. support goes to Honduran forces working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on anti-narcotics operations, and anti-gang, anti-kidnapping and border-security units, according to an embassy official who was not authorized to speak on the record.

On Monday, the State Department announced another $16.3 million in support to Honduran police and prosecutors to battle violence and money laundering and to improve border security. Some of the U.S. money will go to the Gang Resistance Education and Training program under the director of community policing, who also told the AP that he reports directly to Bonilla.

"I only report to the director general, all of the programs of the Honduran police are directed personally by him," said Otoniel Castillo, a police sub-commissioner. "He has a personal and intense closeness to all projects of international cooperation, especially because of his good relationship with the U.S. Embassy."

Assistant Secretary of State William R. Brownfield, who appeared on Monday with the country's vice president to announce the new funding, did not answer questions.

"The United States undertakes stringent vetting procedures, as required by U.S. law, to ensure U.S. assistance doesn't go to individuals or units in the Honduran police and military if there is credible information they're linked to human rights abuses," said William Ostick, a spokesperson in the Western Hemisphere Affairs Bureau of the State Department. "We're in close communication with the U.S. Congress and Senator Leahy on this issue. Promoting human rights and the rule of law is, and will remain, central to our engagement in Honduras."
