Bad Eating Habits | EC Education

Malaysians love to eat. Why not? We have great food around us everyday, so why not just eat them? Wrong. In the fast world that we?re living in these days, it is almost impossible to maintain a good eating habit. Eating is a priority in our everyday lives, but has become something we try to fit into the day and don?t think much about what we put in our bodies. You don?t have to look back at your eating history to get back that healthier lifestyle. You just got to make sure you are aware of these few steps for a better eating lifestyle.

Don?t skip breakfast. You need to start the day with an healthy energy boost to kickstart the mind. It has been proven that whatever you put in your body earlier in the day helps to consume less calories later in the day too, so watch what you?re having before going overboard. Instead of heading for your delicious nasi lemak, try a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of low fat yogurt, or poached egg with whole grain toast and fresh fruit.

Don?t eat before going to bed. We are all guilty of this. We become so hungry so fast at night, but it only makes you gain weight, as well as reducing your sleep, which means you will end up feeling sluggish when you wake up the next day. Fat foods before bed will slow down the emptying of the stomach and spicy food can cause heartburn and indigestion. If you really have to, try fruits and stop eating while you?re watching TV.

Stop binging. It?s a terrible habit when you are eating stuff like pizza, cookies or keropok. It only shows how disciplined you are with your snacking, but it?s never a good idea because you know you will gain that extra pound eventually. Try five to six small meals per day instead. It allows you to binge more than on each day, but make sure you space them out accordingly. This will also help you burn more calories throughout the day because of your high running metabolism.

Don?t starve yourself. Your body knows when it needs food. When you are starving, the body immediately goes to weight gain through the storage of fat. Your body becomes sad when it is lack of food, and when you do decide to feed it, it automatically thinks you need to store them as fat because it doesn?t know when it will receive food again, so the fat remains. Scary huh? Make sure you reevaluate your diet and workout program. Exercising and eating well (vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish) helps your body to stay healthy and not deprived of calories.

Don?t eat while doing something. You know the times when you are watching TV or surfing the net and munching away on food? Your body isn?t paying attention to how much you need to eat because it becomes an almost mechanical movement that is simply thoughtless. Focus on one thing at a time. Don?t go to the kitchen while you?re on the phone or doing work. Find distractions like chewing gum, cleaning up the house, play the guitar or go for a walk.

Stop eating so fast. Slow it down, because eating too fast only allows the weight gain to start. It takes 20 minutes from the minute you start eating for it to reach your brain to tell your body that it?s full. Overeating and eating fast will only add more calories than you need. Slow down, relax and enjoy your food.

Drink water. You need to drink enough water for you to function. If you don?t, it will slow down your metabolism, so it is possible to gain weight because your metabolic functions need it for calorie burning too. There?s no excuse to not drinking water. You should at least drink 8 to 10 glasses a day. More if you exercise regularly. Drink water instead of juice or soda, which contains empty calories that will cause you to feel hungry half an hour later.
