Fantasy Baseball Pickups

As the baseball season progresses fantasy owners have a need to fill in roster spots for players either taking the day/night off for rest, teams with a night off, or players that have been regulated to the DL. As owners take to the waiver wire and free agent lists, here are some players to keep an eye on for the up coming week:

Pedro Ciriaco, SS, Boston Red Sox
Avg: .417 Runs: 4 HR: 0 RBI: 6 %Owned: 22.1
Ciriaco was tapped when Dustin Pedroia was placed on the DL and has been on fire ever since. Pedroia owners looking to fill out their short stop position while he recovers should really consider picking us his replacement. Ciriaco is batting .417 with 6 RBI's in past week.

Jason Vargas, SP, Seattle Mariners
W: 8 ERA: 4.07 WHIP: 1.15 K: 86 Saves: 0 %Owned: 41.8
Vargas has been pretty solid in his last couple of starts. He has posted 22 K's and only 8 walks in his last 4 starts while winning games and getting a no-decision in the other two. Vargas has 8 wins on the season and a total of 86 K's. His ERA could be better, but his WHIP is pretty low. Vargas could be an effective fill-in player if you don't have a pitching option for the day.

Steve Cishek, RP, Miami Marlins
W: 1 ERA: 2.08 WHIP: 1.28 K: 31 Saves: 2 %Owned: 17.1
Cishek has been tapped to help out a struggling Miami closing unit and has not disappointed. Gaining his second save of the season against Washington on July 14th, Cishek retired five batters (including 3 K's) and only gave up one hit. If Heath Bell continues to struggle to close games out, Cishek may find himself in the closer seat more often. As I have learned this year, a good closer or two are worth their weight in gold when it comes to ERA, WHIP and saves. Cishek may be worth a look if you are struggling to find consistent closers.

Nick Markakis, OF, Baltimore Orioles
Avg: .266 Runs: 28 HR: 8 RBI: 27 %Owned: 71.5
Nick Markakis was finally reactivated from the DL last week and is on fire. In his last 5 games Markakis has gone 10 for 24 and has scored 5 runs. Markakis went out at the end of May, and wasn't exactly having a great year. If he can keep his recent hot streak going, Markakis would be worth adding in most fantasy formats.

Adam Lind, 1B/DH, Toronto Blue Jays
Avg: .231 Runs: 17 HR: 8 RBI: 26 %Owned: 37
Lind may not be the ideal fantasy starter, but he has been pretty effective since the beginning of July. Since July third, Lind has hit three of his eight homeruns. Lind is 16 for 35 with 11 RBIs and 6 runs. He started the 2012 season off slow, but he has come on strong in the past couple of weeks.

I grew up on the California coast hunting and fishing on my family's ranch. I have always been a sports fan, but my true appreciation for sports was realized when I joined the Air Force and was shipped to Okinawa, Japan. Having to watch Sunday football at 3:00 AM on Mondays and Monday's addition of Baseball tonight on Tuesday mornings gave me a unique perspective, and true love for all sports. I have a degree in Economics from the University of California Sacramento. I love analyzing statistics to try and predict future outcomes. My favorite quote come from Evan Esar and it says ?Statistics: The only science that enables different experts using the same figures to draw different conclusions.? This describes about 99.9% of all sports analysts! I have two great kids and a wonderful wife. I am truly blessed to have such great family and friends to support me through life. Thanks for reading!
