Updated Q & A: NY Real Estate Continuing Education & License

Long Island Education Board?: Updated Q & A: NY Real Estate Continuing Education & License Requirements

Updated Q & A: NY Real Estate Continuing Education & License Requirements

Does?Lieb School?report my completed credits to the?Department of State (DOS)? Am I responsible for sending my course certificates to the DOS???Credits?received from Lieb School count towards the 22.5 required from the?DOS?for license renewal. Certificates provided at each class serve as proof of credit hours (think of them as a receipt). After each class, Lieb School submits to the Department of State, Bureau of Educational Standards, all licensee information for successful completion of each course. ?Upon?license?renewal, the DOS will require the original signed certificates if you are selected for an audit. Make sure that you keep your certificates in a safe place.?In the event of an audit, the?DOS?will cross reference the certificates with the student completion records received by each school.? ?You are responsible for completing all 22.5 credits by your?license?renewal?deadline date.? How do I renew my New York State Real Estate License??License renewals must be completed online through the Department of State?eACCESSny?website.? ?Please note that the renewal process requires licensees to validate education completion by answering ?Yes? to the Continuing Education question that confirms all CE requirements have been satisfied. ?If you mistakenly answer ?No?, the DOS will not renew your license until they see all original course completion certificates.? You also have to hold onto the original course completion certificates in the event of a license audit by the DOS. ? If I did not complete my continuing education requirements before my license expiration date can I get an extension? ?Please refer to ?177.6 in the?Real Estate?License?Law. The Department of State will only grant extensions in bona fide hardship cases. ?Prior to your?license?expiration: you must?submit?to the Department of State, a written request for the extension, completed?renewal?form, fee, and original documentation demonstrating your hardship;?i.e., medical documentation. ?? more questions answered... Who regulates my New York State Real Estate License???Your license is regulated by the Department of State, New York?(DOS)?and NOT by any real estate school or trade organization.
What are the Continuing Education requirements for real estate agents in NY??Every 2 years, licensed real estate brokers and salespersons in the State of New York are required to take 22.5 continuing education credits. The ONLY mandatory class requirement is at least 3 hours of instruction pertaining to?fair housing?and/or?discrimination?in the sale or rental of real property or an interest of real property, within the 2 - year period immediately preceding a renewal. Are there any exemptions for Continuing Education requirements for real estate agents in New York?? Licensed real estate brokers who are engaged full time in the real estate business and who have been licensed for at least 15 consecutive years immediately preceding license renewal. This exemption must have been met prior to July 1, 2008.? An attorney admitted to the New York State bar is also exempt from the Continuing Education Requirement. Am I required to take a course in Fair Housing if my real estate license is grandfathered??A NYS real estate agent does not need to take a course in Fair Housing if they are generally exempt by way of the "grandfather" factor.? Please refer the agent to Real Property Law section 441(3)(a) where it expresses the requirement for real estate agents to take 3 hours in a fair housing and/or discrimination course within a license renewal cycle. The link for the license law where this is discussed is as follows:?http://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/lawbooks/RE-Law.pdf.? While reviewing the license law, please refer your attention to the last sentence of this requirement wherein it states: "The provisions of this paragraph shall not apply to any licensed real estate broker who is engaged full time in the real estate business and who has been licensed under this article prior to July 1, 2008 for at least 15 consecutive years immediately proceeding such renewal". This is the "grandfather" factor.? In general, the only exception to the "grandfather" factor exemption is for NAR's mandatory quadrennial ethics requirement for members of the?National Association of REALTORS?. This has nothing to do with licensing or the Department of State, New York.? If I already completed a?continuing education class, can I take the same topic again for credit with a different school in NY within the same license renewal cycle??Real estate continuing education courses are assigned independent approval codes by the Bureau of Educational Standards, Department of State, State of New York.? Licensed real estate agents may take multiple courses in the same topic within each "two year cycle of renewal" as long as each course has an independent approval code. Approval codes are assigned for each approved course,?not school and not course topic.??It is advised that you always check your records of previously completed approval codes prior to registration for new courses within your cycle of renewal.? If I already received credit for taking a?continuing education course, can I get credit for taking the same exact course in a different license renewal cycle? ?Yes. While New York State Real Estate License Law, 19 NYCRR 177.18(c), states: "No continuing education course will be considered for continuing education credit more than once within the two year cycle of renewal", there is no specific regulation precluding taking the same continuing education course anew in a subsequent and different license renewal cycle. Do I have to take an Ethics course to renew my license???Ethics training is not a required course for a Real Estate Broker or Salesperson to maintain their license in full force and effect with the Department of State, New York. Ethics courses may be required by your local Board (trade organization), but are not required to maintain your license with the Department of State of New York.

Learn Some Of The Simple Steps Of Home Improvement

Home improvement projects take a lot of effort to begin, whether you have a lot of knowledge and skill or not. Do not allow the TV home improvement shows fool you. Home improvements consist of more than just big jobs. Keep reading to see all of the potential things you can try out.

Basements generally have little, if any, natural light. To ensure your basement is more livable, plan your artificial lighting layout carefully. If you luck out, you have have high, protruding walls from ground level in your basement. If you do, windows may be installable and they would create natural lighting.

Even a small home improvement project can mean a big increase in your home's value. If you are considering the sale of your home, think about making one or two little improvements. For example, you can paint the interior and exterior of your home. Doing this simple job, which only costs a few hundred dollars, can add almost ,000 to the value of your home!

Make sure you have the gear you need before getting started on a new project. You always should procure a harness for your back if you are lifting heavy things, and also a helmet to protect you from falling objects.

You can dress up pillows in any room which can be a simple project. You can use old t-shirts with neat designs, band shirts, or even jeans to cut and sew into pillows. Personalize your teen's room and add some spice without spending a lot of money.

Purchasing brand new furniture is a very costly enterprise. Perhaps you can acquire some quirky pieces from estate sales and thrift shops. You might find real treasures amongst your used items, like furniture for instance. Some may require a bit of work, but with the right time invested, they can be a real asset to your household.

Here is a helpful tip that can help with the problem of water that is too hard. Purchase a water softener and filter your water through it. Through a variety of chemical processes, these appliances reduce water's hardness by extracting the magnesium and calcium that cause hard water. Water softeners that operate on chemical tablets are a popular and cost-effective choice. Choose the one that fits your needs.

When improving the exterior of your home, you can save money and add security by installing motion detecting lights. Motion sensing lights stay off until they detect motion in their path, and then they turn on automatically. This also means intruders will think twice about approaching any home with motion detection lights, in fear that they will be spotted.

When you are going to be doing home improvements that may inconvieience your neighbors, let them know ahead of time. Often, major renovation jobs will require trucks, heavy equipment or a dumpster, so you need to prepare for them. If you let your neighbors know ahead of time, they will most likely be less annoyed and inconvenienced.

As mentioned earlier, home improvement projects can benefit anyone that undertakes them. While it's good to be an expert at home improvements, knowing basic information is helpful. Just remember to use these tips on your next project.

(AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

AP Interview: Ohio's Kasich enthuses over Davos

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Embarking on what he called a reluctant trade mission, Ohio Governor John Kasich said Friday that his state's economic comeback was generating interest ? and potential new business opportunities ? on the world stage in Switzerland.

Ohio's blue-collar voters have made it arguably the most important swing state in recent U.S. presidential elections, and President Barack Obama won the state in November by focusing on the controversial auto industry bailout. Kasich, who explored a presidential bid in the run-up to the 2000 election, also confirmed he would seek re-election in 2014.

The Republican governor, a former congressman who rose to House Budget Committee chairman before working as a Lehman Brothers investment banker and commentator on Fox News Channel, told The Associated Press that he was initially "very reluctant" to make the trip to the annual World Economic Forum in Davos.

He decided to go, he said, after he realized that this week's gathering offered a valuable chance to court business and provide a global perspective. Davos is awash with top business leaders from around the world as well as many other high-profile people from the worlds of politics, academics and commerce.

"It's like a trade mission in one small little area," he said. "We focused almost exclusively on CEOs."

Kasich was involved in a number of panel discussions and held private meetings with about 15 executives from big companies to pitch ideas on investing in Ohio.

"The thing that I have been surprised by is that the people around have heard that things are getting better in Ohio," he said. "I've been shocked."

When talking with international leaders, Kasich said he emphasizes his willingness to work closely with business ? a fact he credits for helping turn Ohio's $8 billion budget deficit into what he says will be a $1 billion surplus.

Among those he held business discussions were U.S.-based Dow Chemical Co. and Philips Healthcare, which announced thousands of layoffs last year and is a part of Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics.

His message: "We're open for business .... If you've got a big idea, come to Ohio."

Lenovo CFO says 'RIM and many others' are on the table as possible deals

Lenovo CFO says 'RIM and many others' are on the table as possible deals

This one is expectedly drawing a big no comment from RIM, but Bloomberg is reporting today that Lenovo has at least considered the possibility of acquiring the company or forming some other type of strategic alliance. That word comes straight from Lenovo's Chief Financial Officer, Wong Wai Ming, who said at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos that "we are looking at all opportunities -- RIM and many others," adding that, "we'll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders." That interest has apparently extended as far as speaking to RIM and its bankers about various possible arrangements, but it's not clear when that happend or how far along the talks went. He also unsurprisingly didn't offer any indication as to when Lenovo might make a decision on the matter. As Bloomberg notes, such a deal would also a number of regulatory hurdles, including a review by the Canadian government.

Bartavelle Coffee and Wine Bar : Bay Area Bites

Let?s just get this out of the way: There are no poached eggs on the menu anymore, not at the skinny little cafe on San Pablo and Hopkins, wedged between Acme Bread and Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant. You won?t find granola there, or buckwheat crepes. No beignets. No baked-goat cheese salad. The coffee doesn?t come in a bowl. Cafe Fanny, the tenant for 28 well-loved years, had a great run, and now it?s gone.

What has sprung up in its place is Bartavelle Coffee and Wine Bar, a new venture for chef-owner Suzanne Drexhage. For Fanny fans, the first impression is reassuring: walls creamy-white, a zinc-clad bar, the comforting smell of fresh coffee and toast, tables and chairs catching the morning sun outside.

Settle in to sip a Sightglass cortado made by Drexhage?s friendly, Blue Bottle-trained barista son, Sam Sobolewski, however, and you?ll start noticing the spiffed-up details: subway-style tiles on the wall behind the kitchen prep area, copper-framed mirrors, shelves displaying neat arrangements of Sightglass coffee bags, Red Blossom Tea tins, Mediterranean-inspired cookbooks and sunny jars of preserved lemons. It?s all light and bright, warm and welcoming.

Bartavelle Coffee and Wine Bar ? Coffee Director and Barista Sam Sobolewski.

Of course, when Drexhage first opened the doors, on October 23 of last year, some regulars seemed surprised to discover that she planned to run her own business rather than the one Alice Waters, Jim Masur, and Sharon Jones opened in 1984. Keep a business going long enough, and your customers start to assume it?s theirs, a community-based extension of their living rooms.

But Drexhage has every intention of becoming that living room again, in her own style. She?s already a familiar face to many in the Bay Area, having worked in the dining room at San Francisco?s Slow Club throughout the 1990s, when it was an everyday hangout for the many media businesses in the Northeast Mission. Later, she spent two years as a waiter at Chez Panisse, then became a wine importer for Kermit Lynch. It was a good job, she said?interesting work, a steady paycheck, benefits?but as the years ticked by into her 40s, she feared being caught in a desk job forever.

In 2008, she started putting together a business plan for a cafe/restaurant in Berkeley. Just before she started looking for financing, the economy tanked?and the business plan went into a drawer. She returned to Chez Panisse, this time to do a year-long internship in the kitchen downstairs. She did some catering, some private cheffing, cooked at pop-up dinners and events with OPENrestaurant, with Samin Nostrat at Tartine AfterHours, at Local 123. She loved being the kitchen, but couldn?t see herself working as just another line cook. Then, a colleague told her about the closure of Cafe Fanny, and how the original owners were looking for a new tenant. It seemed almost too good to be true, but she dusted off her plan, scaled it back to the casual, coffee-and-small-bites business she?d originally envisioned, re-did the numbers and hoped.

Before long, Alice Waters was calling from France: she loved Drexhage?s vision. There was just one thing: She hated the name Drexhage had chosen. Could she think of a new one? Knowing that it?s always wise to keep Alice happy when you?re running a food business in Berkeley, Drexhage and Waters went back and forth until they agreed on Bartavelle, the French word for rock partridge, a plump, quail-like game bird.

Without the separate commissary kitchen that Fanny had relied on, Drexhage had to build more storage, refrigeration, and workspace into the narrow open kitchen. Adding in some new Health Department-mandated sinks revealed plumbing issues that required tearing up and replacing the entire floor. ?My husband Stan, my dad, my brother?everyone helped out,? said Drexhage. ?I have some amazing artisan friends who did some amazing, wonderful things, a lot for trade.? Eric Stark put up new counters, inside and outside, along with a tall cabinet at the back of the restaurant that discretely hides both dry storage and a refrigerator, while Paco Prieto and Pacassa Studios added zinc and copper cladding for both the counters and the outdoor tabletops.

Over the past two months, the brief opening menu of coffee, wine, and crostini has expanded into a appetite-whetting, seasonally-inspired list of sandwiches, small bites, and sweet and savory-topped toasts. Beautiful wooden boards, hand-carved by Prieto, are loaded with assortments of fresh and house-made pickled vegetables, cheeses, cured meats or smoked fish, with Acme bread on the side. In the morning, there?s a whole-grain (and gluten-free) porridge of brown and red rice, red quinoa, amaranth and flax seed, served sweet, with butter, milk, brown sugar or maple syrup, or salty, dribbled with ghee and sea salt or sesame oil and gomaiso.

Almost every purchasing dollar gets spent locally: at Monterey Fish nearby, for local ling cod she salts and dries for brandade; at Sightglass Coffee Roasters and Red Blossom Tea, both based in San Francisco; at Marin?s organic Straus Creamery for butter; at Tomatero Farm, Full Belly, Capay, and Happy Boy Farms for organic vegetables. Gorgeous eggs, with their marigold-yellow yolks bathed in olive oil, sea salt and marash pepper, or enriched with aioli and anchovy, come from a friend out in Clayton, who raises chickens on a biodynamic farm and Waldorf school called Beeloved Farm.

Bartavelle ? Sheep?s milk ricotta and kale sandwich.

Next door, Acme bakes an irresistibly chewy-crunchy Roman-style pizza bianca?a cross between ciabatta and pizza crust?only for Bartavelle, where it?s used for sandwiches like this one spread with Bellwether sheep?s milk ricotta from Marin, sauteed kale and fresh arugula, seasoned with preserved lemons and shallot vinaigrette.

The coffee program is run by her son, Sam Sobolewski, who started his coffee career at 15 as Blue Bottle?s third employee, stamping bags and making drip coffees at the farmers? market. After several years with Blue Bottle, he went to New York to work for Joe: the Art of Coffee, returning last year to help out on the beverage side of Bartavelle.

Why Sightglass? Most importantly, it?s taste: Sobolewski loves their coffee. Local 123, the nearest coffee shop, serves Four Barrel; Bartavelle is Sightglass?s first account in Berkeley. There?s no one coffee roaster that makes the ?best? coffee, says Sobolewski, just like there?s no one winemaker making the ?best? red wine. It?s all a matter of taste and style, and one that so far, even slow-to-change Berkeley is embracing at Bartavelle.

Bartavelle espresso machine. Photo: Wendy Goodfriend

Bartavelle espresso machine.

On this sunny, suddenly warm afternoon in January, Sobolewski looks up from his espresso machine to the wine bottles ranged in front of him as the golden-hour light sluices through the tall front windows, glowing through the pale salmon of the Abbatucci Gris Imperial. A day like this, it?s almost ros? weather, I say. Absolutely, he agrees.

?It?s ros? o?clock at Bartavelle!?

5 Online Tools To Turbocharge 2013 - Business Computing World

2013 is going to be bigger and better. It?s something that is said every year and sometimes it is, certainly 2012 in terms of technology progression was an improvement on 2011 but improvements in an ever efficient world are hard to come by. Using online tools, to be able to do your job wherever and whenever you are connected certainly looks like the best way of improving efficiency in 2013, so here?s 5 online tools I think you should be considering to help you make 2013 bigger and better.

B1

Need to archive stuff? You?ve probably got a zip programme on your desktop but what if you are not on your desktop and need a cloud option? Well,?B1 can be downloaded as free programme (Windows, Mac, Linux and Android ? so can even work on a smartphone). But it really comes into its own as an online archiver, or probably more as an online unzip tool. It can work with .zip, .rar, .7z files so can help you uncompress almost any files you may receive. You then just download the individual uncompressed files.

Evernote

As an app or online,?Evernote helps run more lives than a lorry-load of energy drinks. The online version though is the version that makes it all worthwhile. If you have not seen it ? where have you been? It is effectively an online notepad where you can order and organise your thoughts and tasks to be done. It means you always have your notes to had as it is a cloud-based system you can access via smartphone app or via your computer?s browser.

FreeScreenSharing

Fairly self-explanatory, but much more as well. Online ?virtual meeting? tools are nothing new, but to find one that offers unlimited free meetings, with screen-sharing and audio conferencing is pretty rare. With FreeScreenSharing?you can have up to 96 participants in your meeting too which should be enough for any small business, as will the 6 hour meeting limit (at the moment there is no limit to the number of meetings or total hours you can have per month). There isn?t video-streaming but being honest how important is that ever to the meeting. The downsides are the need for the installation of branded software and the use of Flash, but then again it is free.

UserTesting

Launching a website or a new section without proper-testing is like throwing yourself into the lion?s den with your hands and legs tied ? it will only end messily. Yet, even if you test it hard in-house and beyond with friends, there are also always things you will miss. Employing a full QA testing team however, will also be likely outside your budget which is where this tool comes in handy. UserTesting is US-based but in the virtual world that?s no barrier and for less than the cost of a decent meal for two you can have your site tested by a set of users. Users create a video as they click through your site so you really see it from their eyes and you can even tailor the written questions they need to answer post-test too.

Fiverr

Need a job done quickly and cheaply? Outsourcing those sorts of task, especially the creative ones, opens you up to a very competitive marketplace, so competitive that everybody advertising their skills and expertise here is offering it for just $5 ? hence the name . Looking for a logo? Video to be created? Maybe some link-building? For $5 it is often worth a punt and the standards of the majority of those offering their skills are actually very very high.

Top senators: Tentative deal to curb filibusters

(AP) ? The Senate's senior Democrat and Republican reached a tentative agreement Thursday to impose modest limits on the filibuster, the delaying tactic that minority parties have long used to kill legislation.

The deal would reduce ? but not eliminate ? the number of times opponents can use filibusters on legislation and limit the time spent debating some bills and nominations. If acceptable to most lawmakers, the Senate was expected to approve the restrictions later Thursday.

The pact does not represent a dramatic reworking of Senate rules and leaves the minority party with far more power than it has in the House, where procedures allow a united majority party to muscle through its priorities.

But it could streamline some of the Senate's work and it would avoid what could have been prolonged, nasty battling between the two parties if Democrats ? frustrated by the GOP's growing reliance on the delays ? tried ramming through more decisive changes.

The curbs on filibusters fall short of what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., initially said he favored months ago. He wanted to completely ban the tactic's use when the Senate tries to begin debating a measure, and he threatened to use Democrats' majority in the Senate to simply impose it.

That tactic is called the "nuclear option" because of the bitter partisan warfare it would likely trigger in the chamber, potentially halting almost any business the Senate tried to conduct.

The restrictions also fall far short of what some of the Senate's newer Democrats were demanding. Their proposals included requiring filibustering senators to actually debate on the chamber's floor, a practice immortalized in the film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" but seldom used in recent years.

The No. 2 Senate Democratic leader, Richard Durbin of Illinois, said this week that Democrats lacked enough votes to force that proposal through the Senate.

Durbin said Thursday that the tentative deal was "great for the Senate," and said lawmakers who wanted tighter curbs would have to settle for less.

"That's how this world works," Durbin told reporters. "People start aspiring at very high levels, then you get a negotiation, then you reach something called compromise. And I think we are at that point."

Tight restraints on filibusters were championed by less-senior Democrats like Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Tom Udall, D-N.M, frustrated with the chamber's often glacial debates and the ability of the minority ? these days Republicans ? to kill bills with less than majority Senate support. It takes the votes of 60 of the 100 senators to halt the delaying tactics.

More veteran lawmakers like Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., were reluctant to stifle the tactic, mindful that his party could find itself in the minority after any election and would want to be able to use the maneuvers.

"It is bipartisan, it will give great momentum to working on a bipartisan basis here in the Senate and it will get rid of the major roadblocks that gridlock this Senate," Levin said of the tentative deal.

But at least one long-serving Democrat expressed dissatisfaction, saying the pact would continue to let lawmakers in the minority force those in the majority to get 60 votes to prevail.

"It stands the principle of majority rule on its head," said Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

The liberal group Common Cause, which has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the filibuster, criticized Reid for the agreement, saying the senator "has gone missing in the fight for filibuster reform."

Democrats say Republican use of the tactic has become almost routine and far too frequent. Republicans say they use it because Reid often blocks them from offering amendments.

As part of the agreement, filibusters could be avoided when the Senate tries beginning debate on a bill or nomination. In return, the majority leader would have to allow each party to offer at least two amendments ? addressing a major complaint of Republicans that their amendments are often shut out.

In addition, once the Senate votes to limit debate on certain nominations ? district court judges and administration posts below Cabinet level ? the debate would be limited to two hours, far below the 30 hours now allowed. The proposal was aimed at speeding the time spent on such nominations.

In addition, instead of three separate opportunities for opponents of a bill to wage filibusters to block a Senate vote allowing the chamber to try writing compromise legislation with the House, there would only be one such filibuster allowed.

According to the Senate Historian's Office, there were 73 "cloture" votes to end filibusters in the two-year Congress that ended earlier this month. There were 91 such votes in the Congress that served in the two previous years, and 112 in the two-year Congress before that.

Those are the three highest number of cloture votes in any Congress since the Senate started allowing such votes to end filibusters nearly 100 years ago.

Researchers map emotional intelligence in the brain

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

A new study of 152 Vietnam veterans with combat-related brain injuries offers the first detailed map of the brain regions that contribute to emotional intelligence ? the ability to process emotional information and navigate the social world.

The study found significant overlap between general intelligence and emotional intelligence, both in terms of behavior and in the brain. Higher scores on general intelligence tests corresponded significantly with higher performance on measures of emotional intelligence, and many of the same brain regions were found to be important to both. (Watch a video about the research.)

The study appears in the journal Social Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience.

"This was a remarkable group of patients to study, mainly because it allowed us to determine the degree to which damage to specific brain areas was related to impairment in specific aspects of general and emotional intelligence," said study leader Aron K. Barbey, a professor of neuroscience, of psychology and of speech and hearing science at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois.

A previous study led by Barbey mapped the neural basis of general intelligence by analyzing how specific brain injuries (in a larger sample of Vietnam veterans) impaired performance on tests of fundamental cognitive processes.

In both studies, researchers pooled data from CT scans of participants' brains to produce a collective, three-dimensional map of the cerebral cortex. They divided this composite brain into 3-D units called voxels. They compared the cognitive abilities of patients with damage to a particular voxel or cluster of voxels with those of patients without injuries in those brain regions. This allowed the researchers to identify brain areas essential to specific cognitive abilities, and those that contribute significantly to general intelligence, emotional intelligence, or both.

They found that specific regions in the frontal cortex (behind the forehead) and parietal cortex (top of the brain near the back of the skull) were important to both general and emotional intelligence. The frontal cortex is known to be involved in regulating behavior. It also processes feelings of reward and plays a role in attention, planning and memory. The parietal cortex helps integrate sensory information, and contributes to bodily coordination and language processing.

"Historically, general intelligence has been thought to be distinct from social and emotional intelligence," Barbey said. The most widely used measures of human intelligence focus on tasks such as verbal reasoning or the ability to remember and efficiently manipulate information, he said.

"Intelligence, to a large extent, does depend on basic cognitive abilities, like attention and perception and memory and language," Barbey said. "But it also depends on interacting with other people. We're fundamentally social beings and our understanding not only involves basic cognitive abilities but also involves productively applying those abilities to social situations so that we can navigate the social world and understand others."

The new findings will help scientists and clinicians understand and respond to brain injuries in their patients, Barbey said, but the results also are of broader interest because they illustrate the interdependence of general and emotional intelligence in the healthy mind.

Here's What Facebook's Biggest Advertisers Say ... - Business Insider

BI

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

?

Investors should expect robust growth in Facebook's Q4 ad revenues, according to a confidential straw poll of the social network's biggest advertising clients by Business Insider. Together, the media buyers we spoke to represent several hundred million dollars in annual Facebook adspend.

In Q3, ad revenue grew by ~$200 million year on year, from about $800 million to $1.09 billion (total revenue rose to $1.3 billion). Wall Street analysts are expecting an average of $1.52 billion in total revenues, which is sequential growth of $258 million including non-advertising payments revenue from games and apps. Payments revenue was $176 million in Q3 2012 -- implying that sequential ad revenue growth will be minimal (ie $258 million - $176 million, plus growth).

Our research suggests you should not be surprised if Facebook beats that topline, however. In Facebook's prior fourth quarters, growth has been solid because the holiday shopping season drives so much adspend. (year-on-year growth in Q4 ad sales was greater than $200 million from 2010 to 2011, for instance.)

Analysts may expect only modest growth in Facebook revenues because the company faced some negative sentiment in the quarter. It has not completely dealt with the fake users/fake likes issue, which is a hot-button for the smaller advertisers who make up the bulk of Facebook's client base, for instance.

Also: The Facebook mobile app ad network was halted in testing. The Instagram unit halted plans to introduce advertising. And brands large and small have complained that the new news feed algorithm (which some call "Edgerank") is discriminating against their posts.

But our sources say Q4 was a bumper period for Facebook, regardless. Here's a selection of their commentary:

  • "Good. They will surpass."
  • One client simply said, "up."
  • Another, more cautious, said, "FB revenue increasing slowly."
  • "Really good ... I think they're going to crush it ... there's momentum on top-spending brands."
  • One advertiser said the news feed/Edgerank change increased spending, because advertisers realized that the only way to increase the reach of their posts to all their fans was to buy promoted posts or otherwise advertise on the platform.

The caveat here is obvious: This is a non-representative sampling of only Facebook's larger advertisers, and may therefore be skewed.

Is Your Relationship Meant to be? This is One Way to Find Out Fast ...

Thinking of taking your first vacation away with your boyfriend (or girlfriend!)? While you?re probably excited and thinking of all that hot vacation sex you?re going to have, take a minute to prepare yourself for the fact that it could be a huge test in your relationship. I?m serious!

couple-with-hearts

Yes, I?m still in vacation mode. I went to Aruba with my parents, sister, cousin and J over New Year?s and had a blast ringing in 2013 with the people I love. All I can think about this week back at work is being back there on the beach and how much fun I had with J and my family, which normally could have been a stressful situation (family + close quarters = drama).

It?s also got me thinking back to a not so great vacation I went on back in college with my ex. We spent a week at Disney World and I can still remember this huge fight we had during one of those Main Street parades at Magic Kingdom. I should have realized that if we couldn?t make it work at ?the happiest place on earth? we probably couldn?t make it work, period. Think about it: a vacation is when you should feel most at ease and let loose. If you?re fighting or not enjoying your time with your partner while away from the stresses of everyday life, there might be a bigger issue in your relationship worth exploring. I wish I had taken a closer look at the trip with my ex sooner and realized we weren?t meant to be so that the relationship wouldn?t have dragggged out another year (with many fights after and a pretty intense end after he was finally the one to pull the plug).

Fast-forward to 2010 and I?m back in Disney with J at a couple of the parks before setting sail on a cruise from Florida. This time, this guy, everything was right. It even rained for two full days while we were there. We were forced to wear those weird plastic poncho things while walking around and you know what? It didn?t matter. We had a blast feeling like kids again. It was exciting just to be away together, regardless of what we were doing.

Funny how going to the same place and doing the same things with two people can feel so drastically different, right? Going away with your significant other can be a serious test for your relationship. If you?re not already living together, it?s a preview of what cohabiting could be like. And if you are already together all the time, it?s magnified because you?re together even more while on a trip; there are only so many places to go when you?re at a tropical resort and sharing a room!

Tell me: has a vacation ever tested your relationship? Have you ever gone away with a boyfriend only to realize you weren?t meant to be? Or did you go away and realize you should move in together? Tell me your good, bad, and crazy vacation stories! J and I have managed to survive two solo trips, multiple getaways with friends, and 3+ family vacations so I feel like we?ve passed the test. Wedding planning? Now that?s a test all on it?s own?

Lawmakers release documents on Wal-Mart bribery

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lawmakers are making public emails that show that Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s CEO found out in 2005 that the retailer was handing out bribes in Mexico.

Democratic Congressmen Elijah E. Cummings and Henry A. Waxman, who are investigating bribery charges at Wal-Mart's Mexico division, on Thursday released emails that indicate that Mike Duke and other senior Wal-Mart officials were informed multiple times starting in 2005 about bribes being made in the country. U.S. law forbids American companies from bribing foreign officials.

The emails, which the lawmakers obtained from a confidential source, contradict claims by Wal-Mart senior executives that they had no knowledge of bribes being made by the company in Mexico.

The lawmakers shared the documents with Wal-Mart on Wednesday, and sent a letter to Duke asking for a meeting to discuss them.

"It would be a serious matter if the CEO of one of our nation's largest companies failed to address allegations of a bribery scheme," according to the letter written by Waxman and Cummings to Duke.

Allegations first surfaced in April that Wal-Mart failed to notify law enforcement that company officials authorized millions of dollars in bribes in Mexico to speed up getting building permits and gain other favors. Wal-Mart has been working with government officials in the U.S. and Mexico on that investigation.

Wal-Mart has conducted an internal investigation into the matter. And last November, the retailer said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was looking into potential U.S. bribery law violations in Brazil, China and India.

Brooke Buchanan, a Wal-Mart's spokeswoman, issued a statement on Thursday saying that there was no new information in the letter and that it has been providing information to the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the documents that were released by lawmakers on Thursday. The world's largest retailer also said that it is exploring other ways to make additional information available

"We are committed to having a strong and effective global anti-corruption program everywhere we operate and taking appropriate action for any instance of non-compliance," Brooke said.

The bribery allegations were first reported by the New York Times. Last month, the paper published another story focusing on how Wal-Mart's Mexico division offered large payoffs to get things that the law prohibited.

The documents released Thursday by lawmakers include an email from November 2005 from Maritza Munich, then General Counsel of Wal-Mart International to Duke and other senior Wal-Mart executives. The email informed them of charges related to bribes paid to obtain permits for a store in Mexico.

The email contained a forwarded summary of an interview with Sergio Cicero Zapata, the former in-house counsel for Wal-Mart de Mexico who oversaw obtaining building through permits throughout Mexico.

The lawmakers also made public another email that Wal-Mart General Counsel Thomas Mars sent on Oct. 15, 2005 to Duke and Tom Hyde, the executive vice president of Wal-Mart. That email referenced to bribes paid to obtain permits for the Teotihuacan site.

"You'll want to read this. I'm available to discuss next steps," Mars wrote in the email.

LG Ultra HD Touch Display hands-on (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/lg-ultra-hd-touch-display-hands-on/

We bet you're yawning at the mention of 4K TVs by now, but here's a slight twist on that high-res concept. LG is showing off the so-called Ultra HD Touch display at its CES booth. It's pretty much what it sounds like: a 4K TV with five-point multitouch. LG isn't demoing this product as a TV -- though technically it could work as your standard set; instead it has the Ultra HD Touch running an interactive program created by the French company Intuiface. We could tap to select and enlarge information on different periods of art history, and we could rotate and perform pinch-to-zoom with individual elements on-screen. We could also dive into a drawing app, which included different pen options for doodling directly on the display.

Obviously, this sort of educational setup would be perfectly suited for a museum, though LG hasn't committed to any particular application of this display. Essentially, the idea is to demonstrate that touch technology on a giant 4K TV is quite possible -- and pretty neat, if you ask us -- rather than to debut a new high-brow product. But we have a feeling there will be more of such setups to come. For now, at least, you can check out our hands-on video past the break.

Top 5 Health Retreats: Cleanse, Detox and Invigorate your Body ...

Health Retreat

Just about everyone I know is making themselves a promise to be healthier this year. Just like they did last year, and the year before that.

For me, it?s not something I can ignore. It?s necessary to make lifestyle changes now to help manage my CFS and Fibro, but I?m trying not to look at it as a hardship?more as a positive life choice. I mean, if eating better, trying different therapies and cleansing my body and mind help me feel better and live longer, I can?t see the negative?can you?

I?ve been doing a lot of research into alternative therapies and the benefits of a natural food diet and will be writing a few posts about what I?ve learned, and how you too can implement the changes into your everyday life without feeling any hardship at all. But, if little changes aren?t enough for you right now, and you feel like you need a real kick up the bum to motivate you to give up the junk food, cut down (a little) on the booze and perhaps throw away the ciggies, a retreat may be for you.

Here is my list of the top 5 retreats I would love to visit?and why.

Grand Park Hotel, Austria

The Grand Park hotel is a gorgeous resort in?the southern region of Salzburger in Austria. The hotel focuses on health and has a variety of packages available, tailored to you and your needs; along with some ?out of the box? options that are designed to give you a real lift. Personally, I?d opt for the Grand Park Health Revival, which combines daily spa treatments with healthy food and your choice of activities. The more able could choose hiking, skiing or cycling, while those looking for a more gentle break can choose yoga, pilates or ?Tai Chi. A 4-night stay costs from ?1060 which includes flights, accommodation, transfers, treatments and full board. (The Healing Caves break also looks fantastic. From ?1690)

Grand Park Hotel Gardens, Austria Health Retreat

Ananda in the Himalyas

Ananda is perfect for those looking for a spiritual break that will enhance both body and mind.?Once the residence of Maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal, this beautiful resort is located in the swirling mists of the Himalayas. Entirely holistic, Ananda aims to help us all?understand the balance of nature, the ways of the Universe and how the elements affected not just our physical health, but our mental well-being. The list of packages is extensive but if I were to travel this far, I?d like to recharge with my partner, so would choose the 5 night Couples Connect package. It?s definitely not cheap at ?600 per night, which includes full board, all treatments and transfers. The Stress Management course also looks fantastic, at ?220 for 7 nights)

Ananda Health Retreat, Himalayas

Penninghame House, Scotland

A little closer to home, Penninghame House offers a variety of programmes to both help you feel better, and to help you help others feel better too. The options here are great, with courses to improve self esteem, leave your past behind and live a macrobiotic lifestyle. Personally, I?d choose the Ultimate Health Experience, which is a one week residential retreat in?the regal 19th century manor house. The day starts with morning exercise (Chi Ball or Yoga), followed by a full healthy breakfast. The afternoon session sees lectures from guest speakers, followed by cooking classes that will inspire you to change your diet for good. The evenings include screenings, Q&A sessions and the options for personal counselling sessions or alternative activities. They claim to be able to help with many long term health issues, including diabetes and chronid fatigue syndrome. What I love about this programme is the variety and flexibility; I imagine you?d leave feeling fresh, motivated, cleansed and with a new set of skills for living a cleaner and more nutritious lifestyle. Prices for the Ultimate Health Experience start at ?995.

Penninghame House

SHA Wellness Clinic, Alicante, Spain

SHA is a world leading medical hotel/wellness clinic, set in a?beautiful area of Spain,?focused on improving and notably lengthening people?s health and well-being. The staff includes a number of medical Doctors with varying specialities, who aim to improve health as a whole, not just treat a specific illness. The architecturally designed, award winning hotel is the height of luxury and sits in the hillside, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at Albir Beach. They have three main packages, Essence, Discovery and Feeling, plus many other tailored options. I think here I?d opt for a gorgeous 2 night stay on the SHA Feeling programme, which helps you quickly?evaluate?diet, de-stress and relax with the beautiful facilities and treatments. The cost is 500euros for 2 nights- not bad for some relaxation and luxury.

SHA Wellness Clinic and Medical Hotel, Spain

Aguas de Ibiza Lifestyle & Spa, Ibiza

Most people know of my love of Ibiza. It?s not about the clubbing and craziness for me; it?s about the spirituality and beauty of the island in it?s natural form. Of course, you can have a great time in the super-clubs, but there is so much more to the White Isle than that. The 38? North courses are primarily focused about fitness, but I would personally book the Detox Retreat (?1580 for 6 night accommodation, flights, transfers, treatments and activities). The course includes 2 wellness and 2 nutritional consultations (start and end), a variety of treatments and daily activity classes. All this is great, but you also get to stay in the amazing Aguas de Ibiza Hotel in Santa Eularia ? one of my favourite places on the island.

38? North Ibiza Detox Retreat at Aguas de Ibiza

Honorable?mentions:

F*&K It Retreats

Unfortunately, I never got to experience The Hill that Breathes, a completely radical retreat in the hills of Italy. However, I spread the word to anyone who would listen, as it looked incredible. The Hill that Breathes won ?Europes Best Retreat? in 2011, but John & Gaia decided to close the doors for a while and have now taken their infamous ?F**k It? programme mobile. Take a look at the calendar of events here; I have all?the?F**k It books and love the philosophy. You probably will too.

Fuck It retreats

Yeotown, Devon

Yeotown opened it?s doors in 2010 and has already been voted ?Best Spa Retreat UK? by Conde Naste Traveller readers. This gorgeous farmhouse offers inspiring programmes for health and fitness, in what they call?a ?stylishly comfortable, rustic haven of health?. This would be the ideal break for those of you looking to lose weight, get fitter and cleanse at the same time.

Yeotown

The?Scarlet?Hotel, Cornwall

I?ve been looking into visiting the Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall for a long time now, and it?s creeping higher up my to do list by the day. This Boutique Eco-Spa-Hotel offers a range of spa break options that are tailored to your individual needs, set in the beautiful surroundings of the Cornish coast.

A little bit quirky, easily bored and obsessively interested in knowing everything there is to know (if I don?t know?I?ll Google it). Part Italian, part Austrian, raised in London and very happy about it. I was in a hit and run accident 8+ years ago. I?m still a little broken but completely OK about it?most days. I love fashion, food, simplicity, photographs, being barefoot, observing stillness, The Rolling Stones and finding beauty in unexpected places.

Nikon J3 and S1 handson video

Nikon's 1 series of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras may not be the first choice among professional photographers, but they're apparently selling like hotcakes, and they're a big hit at CES, too. Front and center in Nikon's booth, there's a pair of professional dancers practicing their craft on continuous shifts, surrounded by a ring of J3 and S1 bodies and a variety of colorful lenses. Both cameras look and feel very similar to Nikon's first model in this series, the J1.

There's a handful of new colors available, and the internals have gotten a bit of a boost, but all in all, the cameras would feel mighty familiar to any 1 series user. The 14.2-megapixel J3 is Nikon's premium model, if you can call it that, while the 10.1-megapixel S1 is the entry-level variant, with kit prices set at $600 and $500, respectively. Both cameras are set to ship next month -- catch all the specs at our announcement post, and jump past the break for a closer look in our hands-on.
