Book Excerpt: Bruce Perry?s Fitness For Geeks

Screen Shot 2012-04-27 at 8.53.27 AMAnd Now for Something Completely Different Try this: you wake up without an alarm sometime soon after sunrise, with plenty of time to spare to make it to work. It was a good sleep; you went to bed just after nine o?clock after having a snack consisting of coconut milk blended with blueberries and a little whey powder. You?re already savvy about getting enough REM sleep, but now you aim to bump up your deep sleep, or restorative NREM. You might even check out the wave chart your Zeo produced. The first thing you do is pour a cup of black tea or coffee and go outside to this pool of sunlight you?ve noticed out your window. You bask and reflect in it for a minute, perhaps followed by a few Tai Chi moves, push-ups on the lawn, or pull-ups on the jungle gym across the street from your apartment. You sip a bit more coffee and return to your living space to get ready for the commute. Technically speaking, as you gazed up into the sky and basked in that sun, the light rays touched your retinas and were transduced by the hypothalamus and pineal gland in your brain, which has now helped set your circadian rhythms for the day.

NVIDIA unleashes GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, loads it with dual Kepler GPUs, charges $1k

ImageWould you look at that? NVIDIA hinted it would be coming today, and it looks like the tease is living up to the hype. The company stormed into the weekend at its Shanghai Game Festival by unleashing its latest offering, the GeForce GTX 690 -- and oh yeah, it's packing two 28nm Kepler GPUs! Trumping the recently released GTX 680 as the "worlds fastest graphics card," it's loaded with a whopping 3,072 Cuda cores. The outer frame is made from trivalent chromium-plated aluminum, while you'll find thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan for vibration reduction and added cooling. Aiding in cooling even further, the unit also sports a dual vapor chamber and center-mounted fan. It'll cost you a spendy $1,000 to pick up one these puppies come May 3rd, and you'll likely be tempted to double up -- two can run together in SLI as an effective quad-core card. With that said, NVIDIA claims that a single 690 runs 4dB quieter and handles about twice the framerate as a duo of GTX 680s in SLI -- impressive, but we'll reserve judgement until we see it for ourselves. check out the press release after the break if you'd like more information in the meantime (...and yes, it runs Crysis -- 2 Ultra to be exact -- at 57.8fps, according to NVIDIA).

The Wanted will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway to not only celebrate the release of their self-titled U.S. debut EP, but also to premiere their highly anticipated video for "Chasing the Sun" during "MTV First: The Wanted," airing Tuesday, April 24, at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV.

Immediately following the MTV premiere, the cheeky British fivesome will stay on for an additional 30-minute live Q&A session with Sway on MTV.com. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted.

Not enough Wanted for you? Well, MTV News will follow the group all day long before they sit down for "MTV First" as they travel New York City to promote the album release, giving fans insider updates on all the latest happenings from each stop online and on mobile.

The guys are also one of the 32 boy-band hopefuls in MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands, which pits some of the greatest boy bands of all time against one another, until fans vote their favorite group to #1. The battle rages on at BBB.MTV.com, with the first round ending on Thursday.

Fans can weigh in on the matches on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB. The winner of Battle of the Boy Bands will be announced on Monday, May 7, live on "AMTV" on MTV.

Galaxy Nexus, Viper and Optimus Elite now available on Sprint

Sprint Android phones

Today sees the launch of three new smartphones on Sprint's network. First up is Google's current flagship device, the Galaxy Nexus. Sprint has the CDMA/LTE variant, which is very similar to the Verizon LTE version currently doing the rounds in the U.S. There's the same 720p HD SuperAMOLED display and 1.2GHz dual-core CPU that GNex owners have been enjoying since late 2011, and we're sure Sprint customers will be eager to get their hands on their very own version of the current Android flagship.

Next up is the LG Viper, an entry-level 4G LTE device for customers looking for a good all-round LTE smartphone. Inside you'll find a 1.2GHz processor along with NFC, Google Wallet and hotspot capability on top of a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display.

Finally, there's the Optimus Elite, which we got to play with just a few days ago at its launch event.  It's definitely an entry-level device, with a 3.5-inch HVGA display and 5MP camera. But if you're not looking for anything too fancy from you Android smartphone experience, you could definitely do a lot worse.

Space Shuttle Discovery to swoop over National Mall (+video)

Perched atop a modified jumbo jet, the retired Space Shuttle Discovery will fly over Washington before arriving at its permanent resting place at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Space?shuttle?Discovery has one last mission to complete.

At daybreak Tuesday, the oldest of NASA's retired?shuttle?fleet will leave its home at Kennedy?Space?Center for the final time, riding on top a modified jumbo jet.

Its destination: the Smithsonian Institution's hangar outside Washington, D.C.

The plane and jet will make a farewell flight over Cape Canaveral before heading north. The pair also will swoop over the nation's capital, including the National Mall, before landing in Virginia.

Space?center workers arrived by the busloads Monday at the old?shuttle?landing strip, where the jet was parked with Discovery bolted on top. Security officers, firefighters, former?shuttle?workers and even astronauts all posed for pictures in front of Discovery.

The six astronauts who flew Discovery's final?space?trip a year ago were on hand to bid Discovery goodbye.

Discovery first launched in 1984 and flew 39 times in?space, more than any other?shuttle. It is the oldest of NASA's three surviving?space?shuttles?and the first to head to a museum.

It will go on display at the Smithsonian's hangar at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, replacing Enterprise, the?shuttle?prototype that never made it to?space?but was used in landing tests in the late 1970s. Enterprise is bound for New York City's Intrepid Sea, Air &?Space?Museum.

"It's good to see her one more time, and it's great that Discovery is going to a good home. Hopefully, millions of people for many, many years to come will go see Discovery," said Steven Lindsey, the last astronaut to command Discovery. "It's also sad ... it's sad to see that the program is over."

NASA ended the?shuttle?program last summer after 30 years to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit. Lindsey, no longer with NASA, now works in the commercial?space?industry, helping to develop a successor for launching American astronauts to the International?Space?Station.

Stephanie Stilson, a NASA manager who is heading up the transition and retirement of the three remainingshuttles, said Discovery looked as though it had just arrived from a ferry trip from the backup landing site in California, as it did so many times in years past.

Londoners mourn as teletext goes dark, a victim of the DTV transition

Londoners mourn as Teletext goes dark, a victim of the DTV transition

Despite the many advantages of digital broadcast television, the transition is separating Europeans from a reliable source of information known as teletext. Citizens of London are the latest to experience the loss, as analog signals in the region were switched off just yesterday. Ceefax, a service of the BBC, has provided millions of Britons with news, sports, weather, television listings, subtitles and games for the past 38 years, and is now accessible only in Kent, Sussex, north-east England and Northern Ireland. Soon, it may cease to exist altogether.

Seen as a precursor to the internet, teletext is a free service that's heavily rooted in analog PAL signals, where small packets of data are sent in the vertical blanking interval, which is otherwise unnoticed by viewers. Because the information is broadcast, users were never subject to network congestion, and only needed to wait a brief moment for their desired page to be transmitted -- more advanced televisions even cached this information locally. As part of the airwaves, the service is naturally free, and in that sense, it lacks a suitable replacement. As with all progress, however, there are casualties, and teletext was an unfortunate bystander. Those who cherished the service can take a moment to relive the memories in the links below.

Sony patent application aims to put names to faceless MMO players, organize real-world meetups

Image

Dear MMO players, Sony's getting worried about your indoor tan. Really. The electronics giant's even gone so far as to file a patent application to get you out of your parent's basement and into the great outdoors. Alright, so the move isn't altogether altruistic -- it's more of a means to a promotional end -- but from the looks of this USPTO doc, the company's outlined a method to create a program that would encourage gamers to head into the daylight for organized events where everyone knows your online name. Of course, there'd be rewards and other incentives (trophies, perhaps?) on hand to coax you out of that Snuggie and help foster a sense of community. Not to worry, though, Bunim / Murray haven't got their MTV-friendly reality cams targeted on this concept, yet.

Goodbye, Discovery: Legendary Space Shuttle Takes Its Final Flight [Video]

The Space Shuttle Discovery hitched a ride today on NASA's 747 to National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. It's yet another period at the end of the melancholy final paragraph of the Space Shuttle program. So long, Discovery. And thank you for the memories. More »
